Egypt Private Tour Review: My Personal Experience With a Local Guide

Why Book a Private Egypt Tour?

Are you longing to see the temples, tombs, and treasures of Egypt but want more than a packaged group experience? I recently explored Egypt on a custom, privately guided tour. With the expertise of a local Egyptologist, every site was brought to life and every day became a story worth telling. Here’s what a private tour truly offers and why it’s my top recommendation for anyone seeking an insightful journey through Egypt.

  • Unique details: Christian frescoes hidden inside Luxor Temple, ancient “botanical zoo” reliefs at Karnak, and memorable moments with locals.

Our Custom Itinerary: Where We Went

Our adventure began in Luxor, the ancient capital of Thebes. We explored the monumental Karnak and Luxor temples, wandered through the legendary Valley of the Kings, paused in awe at the immense Colossi of Memnon, and delved into the artistry of the Ramesseum and the striking mortuary temple of Hatshepsut. We travelled north to the vividly decorated temples of Abydos and Dendera, sites that felt a world away from the usual crowds.

From Luxor, we boarded a classic Nile cruise: stopping at the well-preserved temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo. In Aswan, we visited the atmospheric Philae Temple, witnessed the Unfinished Obelisk, and enjoyed a tranquil felucca ride at sunset. An early-morning drive took us to Abu Simbel’s colossal statues, a marvel of ancient engineering and modern relocation. Finally, we completed our journey in Cairo, discovering the Pyramids of Giza, Saqqara’s Step Pyramid, the mysterious Serapeum, and the incomparable treasures of the Egyptian Museum and the new Grand Egyptian Museum.

Moments That Stood Out

These are the experiences that couldn’t be planned or predicted, the moments that made my journey unique.

  • Hidden Christian Icons at Luxor Temple
High above eye level, our guide revealed a faded frieze of Christian icons painted directly over hieroglyphs and royal cartouches. Early Christians, fleeing persecution, found sanctuary in these ancient chambers, a moving illustration of Egypt’s spiritual layers.
  • Karnak’s Pharaoh’s “Stone Zoo”
In a quiet section of the temple, carvings of exotic plants and animals told stories of pharaohs who brought wonders home from distant lands, creating an ancient “botanical zoo.” Our guide’s insight turned a simple wall into a window on Egypt’s global reach.
  • First Light over the Valley of the Kings
A sunrise hot air balloon flight gave me a silent, golden view over the tomb-filled hills.
  • Alone at the Ramesseum
Stepping through the colossal ruins of Ramesses II’s mortuary temple, we found ourselves the only visitors. The silence magnified the scale and grandeur of fallen statues, toppled columns, and jackals in the distance. It was a rare, almost private encounter with pharaonic history.
  • The Grandeur of Hatshepsut’s Temple
Approaching this cliffside monument, I was struck not only by its symmetry but by the power of its namesake, a female pharaoh who left her mark on Egypt against all odds.
  • Unexpected Kindness in Cairo
A chance encounter with a retired university lecturer led to a joyful meal and stories far from the tourist trail.

The Personal Power of a Private Guide

Working with a passionate, experienced Egyptologist made every day feel curated and personal. Our guide was warmly greeted wherever we went & often referred to as “Dr. Egypt”. He ensured we avoided crowds, lingered where interest dictated, and told stories not included in guidebooks. The context, flexibility, and warmth provided by our guide were, for me, the real luxury. The video below demonstrates the depth of detail he provided.

Practical Tips for Travelling Egypt

  • Best Time to Go: Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the best weather and manageable crowds.
  • Essentials: Bring sun protection, a brimmed hat, reusable water bottle, and a small medical kit.
  • Tipping: Small USD bills are handy for guides, drivers, and porters—tips are part of the culture.
  • Packing: Choose lightweight, modest clothing and comfortable shoes for uneven terrain.
  • Safety: I felt secure everywhere, with a strong security presence at all major sites. Check the latest government advisories (AustraliaUSUK).
  • Itinerary: Don’t overpack your days. Egypt’s scale and heat can be draining.

Is It Safe to Visit Egypt?

Based on my experience, Egypt felt safe,  especially in the main tourist centres and with a reputable private guide. Security is visible at hotels and sites, and tourism is a top priority for the country. Always check current government advice and use a trusted agent for peace of mind.

Who Will Love This Tour?

  • History and archaeology enthusiasts
  • Families, couples, and solo travellers seeking personalised, flexible experiences
  • Curious travellers who want deep stories, not just snapshots
