20 places on my bucket list

20 places on my bucket list

I originally titled this post “The Top 20 Places …” but quickly realised there are far too many incredible places I’d still love to see. How can I really say which are the “top” ones until I’ve been there?

So instead, here are twenty places that continue to capture my imagination, a mix of dream destinations and a few I’ve already been lucky enough to experience.

1. St Petersburg, Russia

For its grand palaces, rich history and summer light over the canals. Current travel advice for Russia is "Do Not Travel" due to the impacts of the armed conflict with Ukraine and the related risks.

2. Aurora Borealis, Northern Europe

✔️ Achieved! I witnessed this spectacular display in Iceland. Read about it here

3. Faroe Islands or Lofoten Islands

Remote, rugged and dramatic landscapes I’d love to photograph in person.

4. Scandinavia

A region that combines design, nature and balance, something I admire deeply.

5. Norway

Sailing through its fjords and seeing waterfalls plunge straight into the sea is still high on my list.

6. Cinque Terre, Italy

Pastel coloured villages perched above the Ligurian coast. Pure magic.

7. Malta

✔️ Achieved! Small in size, big in character. I loved exploring its history and Mediterranean warmth.

8. South America

From Machu Picchu to Patagonia, it’s a continent I’ve long wanted to explore properly.

9. Autumn in New England, USA

To see the brilliant colours of fall and experience a true American autumn.

10. Portugal

Scheduled 2027! I’ll be exploring this beautiful country on a Douro River Cruise

11. Budapest, Hungary

A city that blends old world charm with riverside beauty and thermal baths.

12. Maldives

For the overwater villas, turquoise lagoons and sense of total calm.

13. Grand Canyon, USA

Nature’s artistry on a monumental scale. One of those places I need to see to believe.

14. Kings Canyon, Australia

A reminder that awe inspiring landscapes aren’t only overseas.

15. Miami, USA

For the mix of art deco architecture, beach life and Latin rhythm.

16. Calabria and Sicily, Italy

The deep south of Italy, full of heritage, flavour and family connections waiting to be discovered.

17. Hawaii, USA

Volcanic landscapes, surf culture and the spirit of aloha.

18. Samoa or Tahiti

Tropical islands where the pace slows and nature takes centre stage.

19. Corfu, Greece

Olive groves, Venetian charm and the bluest water imaginable.

20. Cappadocia, Türkiye

✔️ Achieved! Floating above the fairy chimneys in a hot air balloon was every bit as magical as it looks. Read about it here.

Every destination on this list means something different to me. Some are for the landscapes, others for the stories they hold. I’ve ticked off a few, but the list keeps growing, just like my love of travel.

There are a few other remarkable places that haven’t quite made the list but remain firmly on my radar, including Antarctica, Svalbard and the Northwest Passage. Each promises extraordinary wildlife, remote landscapes and the kind of pure adventure that continues to inspire my future travels.

What about you? Which destinations are still on your travel bucket list? I’d love to hear where you dream of going next.
